ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Timeline of women rabbis

Once upon a time, a long time ago, only men were allowed to become rabbis. But then, some very smart and brave women wanted to become rabbis too. They had to work really hard and go to school for a long time to learn everything they needed to know.

Finally, after a lot of talking and debating, some people decided that it was okay for women to be rabbis. This happened in different places at different times, but it was a big change for everyone. Some people were very happy about it and some people were not.

In the 1970s, the first woman rabbi was ordained in America. Her name was Sally Priesand and she worked very hard to show that women could be just as good rabbis as men. Since then, more and more women have become rabbis and there are now many wonderful women rabbis all around the world.

But even though things have changed a lot, there are still some people that don't think women should be rabbis. So, it's important to keep working hard and being brave, just like the women who fought for their right to be rabbis.
