Timeline of women's legal rights (other than voting) before the 19th century

Before the 19th century, many countries and societies in the world did not have equal rights for women. This means that women were not treated the same way as men and did not have the same opportunities to do things like go to school, work outside the home, or own property.

For example, in Ancient Rome, women were not allowed to vote or hold public office. They were also not allowed to inherit property or have control over their own finances. In Ancient Greece, women did not have the right to own land, vote, or participate in government.

During the Middle Ages in Europe, women were often limited to roles as wives and mothers. They were not allowed to attend universities or become doctors or lawyers. In some societies, women were even considered property of their husbands and had no legal rights of their own.

Over time, however, women began to demand more rights and opportunities. In England in the 1700s, women began organizing for better working conditions and equal treatment under the law. The first women's rights convention was held in Seneca Falls, New York in 1848, which marked the beginning the feminist movement in the United States.

Some of the key legal rights that women fought for and won before the 19th century include the right to own property, receive an education, and access to certain professions. However, it would not be until the passage of the 19th amendment in 1920 that women achieved the right to vote in the United States.
