Okay kiddo, do you know what voting is? It's when people get to choose who they want to lead our country. But did you know that for a long time, some people were not allowed to vote just because they were girls?
It wasn't always like that though. When the United States was first founded, only men who owned property had the right to vote. This excluded a lot of people like women, black people and poor people.
Over time, some people started to feel like everyone deserves a chance to vote, not just men who own property. So in the 1800s and early 1900s, women started protesting - that means they were speaking out and marching to try and change the rules. They believed that women should be able to vote just like men.
It was a long fight and it took many years, but eventually women started to win the right to vote in different states. The first state to give women the right to vote was Wyoming, in 1869 - that was over 150 years ago!
But it wasn't until 1920 that women across the country were given the right to vote. That year, the 19th Amendment was added to the US Constitution. That's like a set of rules that everyone in the country has to follow. The 19th Amendment said that women have the right to vote just like men do.
So now, thanks to brave women who fought long and hard, every person in the United States who is over 18 years old can vote in elections. It doesn't matter if you're a boy or a girl, or if you own property or not. Everyone gets a voice in choosing who leads our country!
