Tjilbruke

Tjilbruke is a very important story for the Kaurna people who are the traditional owners of the Adelaide Plains. It starts with a man named Tjilbruke who had a really important job to do. His job was to carry a special stone that belonged to the Kaurna people. This stone was very powerful and important because it held the spirit of the people.

One day, Tjilbruke was with some other men who did not treat the stone with respect. They were playing around with it and not being careful. Tjilbruke was very upset by this and he knew that he had to do something to make sure the stone was safe.

So, Tjilbruke decided to go on a long walk. He walked all the way from the Adelaide Plains to the south coast of South Australia. It was a very long and difficult journey, but he knew it was necessary to protect the stone.

When Tjilbruke got to the coast, he saw a beautiful island in the distance. He knew that this was a special place and that he had to take the stone there to keep it safe. So, he started to swim across the water to the island.

As he swam, he used his special powers to create a path of stones across the water. This made it easier for him to get across without getting tired or hurt.

When Tjilbruke got to the island, he buried the stone deep in the ground. He knew that it would be safe there and that it would protect the spirit of the Kaurna people.

But, Tjilbruke was very tired from his long journey and he could not swim back to the mainland. So, he turned himself into a bird and he flew back home.

Today, the story of Tjilbruke is still very important to the Kaurna people. They remember the bravery and determination of Tjilbruke and the importance of caring for their special stone. They also use the story to teach their children about the importance of respecting their culture and the natural world around them.
