Tobler's First Law of Geography states that "Everything is related to everything else, but near things are more related than distant things". This means that things that are closer together are more likely to be connected in some way than things that are far away. Think of a map. On a map, places that are close together usually have roads or other paths that connect them. Places that are far apart are usually only connected by long, winding roads or by air or water travel. In other words, near things are more related than distant things.
