Tohunga Suppression Act 1907

Okay kiddo, let me tell you about something called the Tohunga Suppression Act 1907. A long long time ago, in New Zealand, there were some special people called Tohunga. These were people who had special knowledge and skills related to Maori culture, religion, and health. Maori people, the indigenous people of New Zealand, would often go to Tohunga for help when they were feeling sick or when they needed spiritual guidance.

But some people who were not Maori didn't like the Tohunga. They thought that their practices were strange and didn't make sense to them. They also believed that Tohunga were making people sick instead of curing them. So, they passed a law called the Tohunga Suppression Act in 1907 to stop Tohunga from practicing their skills.

This means that Tohunga were not allowed to help people anymore. If they were caught, they could be punished with fines or even go to jail. The law was not fair, because it went against the rights of Maori people to practice their own traditions and beliefs. Some people believe that the law was passed to control Maori people and force them to adopt the beliefs of the people in power.

Eventually, the law was removed in 1962. Today, Maori people have a right to practice their own culture, including the use of Tohunga in healing and spiritual practices. We should respect everyone's beliefs and not try to suppress them just because we don't understand them.
