ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Toilet training

Toilet training is a process where grown-ups teach little kids how to do pee and poop in the potty or toilet instead of their diaper. When babies are born, they don't know how to control their pee and poop, so they wear a diaper to catch it all. But as kids get older, they can learn to use a potty or toilet like grown-ups do.

To start toilet training, parents and caregivers need to pay attention to when kids need to go pee or poop. They might notice their child does a little dance or says they need to go. When this happens, grown-ups can bring the child to the toilet or potty and sit them down. They should make sure the child is comfortable and not scared.

It's important to celebrate any success and reinforce the idea of using the potty or toilet when they need to pee or poop. Rewards like stickers or small treats can be helpful as they learn.

Sometimes it can take a while for a child to learn how to use the toilet or potty all the time, but that's okay. Grown-ups need to be patient and encourage the child to keep trying. Soon enough, the child will feel proud of themselves for being able to go pee and poop in the right place!
