ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Topic-prominent language

Okay kiddo, have you ever heard people speak in different languages? Well, some languages are called "topic-prominent" languages. This means that they focus more on what the speaker is talking about instead of who is doing the action.

Let's say your mommy is telling you a story about her day. In a topic-prominent language, she might start by saying something like "About work today, I saw a dog." Instead of saying "I saw a dog while I was at work today." See the difference?

The language is putting more emphasis on the "work" part of the story instead of the "I" part.

So, topic-prominent languages like to highlight the main idea or topic of a sentence or story. It helps the listener understand what is important in the message.
