Torque and speed of a DC motor

A DC motor is a device that takes energy (usually electricity) and uses it to spin. The speed of the motor is how fast it spins and the torque is how much things it can spin. Think of it like a toy car. If you want it to go faster, you add more energy by turning up the speed dial. This makes it go faster. But if you want it to be able to move heavier things, like a larger toy car, you also need to increase its torque. That can be done by turning up a different dial, the torque dial. So in a DC motor, the speed of the motor controls how fast it spins, and the torque of the motor controls how much stuff it can spin.
