Okay kiddo, imagine you have a big box full of toys. Some of the toys are cars, others are stuffed animals, and there are even some puzzles in there. Now, a total subset means that we want to look at all the different groups of toys we can make using everything in the box.
For example, we could make a subset that only includes the cars - this would be a subset of just cars. Or we could make a subset that includes all the stuffed animals and some of the puzzles - this would be a bigger subset made up of more toys.
The total subset is just all the different subsets we can make using everything in the toy box. We can have a subset with just one toy, a subset with two toys, a subset with three toys, and so on, all the way up to the biggest subset possible which would include all the toys in the box.
Does that help you understand what a total subset is?
