ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Transatlantic communications cable

Okay kiddo, imagine you have two of your friends who live on opposite sides of the playground. You want to talk to them and tell them all about your cool new toy, but it's too far to shout and they might not hear you.

Now imagine there's a big long noodle that goes all the way from one side of the playground to the other. You can use it to talk to your friends, without having to shout or walk all the way over to them.

The noodle is kind of like a transatlantic communications cable. It's a really long cable that runs along the bottom of the ocean, connecting the United States to Europe. People use it to send messages, pictures, and videos back and forth really fast, without having to wait a long time or worry about their messages getting lost.

The cable is made up of tiny wires that are wrapped in layers of special materials that protect them from water and damage. It's kind of like how your toys might be wrapped in bubble wrap to keep them safe when you move.

So, just like how you can talk to your friends across the playground using the noodle, people can communicate with each other across the ocean using the transatlantic communications cable. It's really amazing, isn't it?
