The Treaty of Lima is a very important agreement that was signed by Peru and Chile in the year 1929. Basically, it was a way for both countries to settle a long-standing border dispute that had been causing a lot of tension and conflict between them.
Now, pretend you and your best friend have a favorite toy that you both love to play with. But one day, you start arguing about who it belongs to and where the toy should be kept. You both might get angry and upset, and maybe even stop playing with each other altogether.
Well, Peru and Chile were kind of like that. They both wanted control over an area of land called the Tacna-Arica region, which is located near the border between the two countries. For many years, they argued and fought over the land, and it led to a lot of bad feelings and bad blood between them.
But eventually, they agreed to sit down and talk things out. They came up with the Treaty of Lima, which basically said that Peru would give Chile control over the Tacna-Arica region for a certain number of years, and then Chile would give it back to Peru.
It was kind of like sharing the favorite toy with your friend – you agree to let them have it for a little while, but then they have to give it back to you so you can play with it again.
The Treaty of Lima was a really important moment for both Peru and Chile, because it helped bring about peace between the two countries. It also showed that sometimes, even when we disagree or argue with our friends, we can work things out and find a solution that makes everyone happy.
