ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Tricameralism

Tricameralism means having three groups of people who make decisions together. Just like how you have three parts to your body - your head, your chest, and your tummy - tricameralism has three different parts that work together.

In some places, like South Africa a while ago, they tried to have three different parts of government to help make important decisions. One part would represent people who owned land, another part would represent people who didn't own land but still had money, and the last part would represent people who didn't have much money at all.

They thought that if they had people from different parts of society working together, they would make better decisions for everyone. Just like how your head helps your tummy digest food and your chest helps you breathe, each part of government working together can help make sure all the people in a country are happy and healthy.

But even though it sounds like a good idea, tricameralism wasn't always successful. Sometimes, one group would have more power than the others, or people would feel like their voices weren't being heard. So even though it's a good idea to work together in different groups, it's not always easy to make sure everyone is treated fairly.
