ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Triplet state

Okay kiddo, so take a look at this ball. This ball has something called an electron inside of it. Now, sometimes this electron likes to spin around in different ways.

When it's really excited, the electron can spin in two different ways at the same time, and we call this the "singlet state". But sometimes, the electron can spin in three different ways at the same time, which we call the "triplet state".

Now, why is this important? Well, it turns out that some molecules in our world have electrons that like to be in the triplet state. When these molecules absorb light, the energy from the light can get the electrons in the molecule really excited and they'll jump up to the singlet state.

But then, they'll quickly move back down to the triplet state, releasing some of that energy as light that we can see with our eyes. This is why we see some things like fireworks or neon lights glowing different colors - because those molecules are in the triplet state and releasing energy as light.

So basically, the triplet state is just a special way that electrons can spin inside a molecule, and it can make things glow with cool colors!
