ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Trough (meteorology)

Have you ever seen a slide in a playground? It has two sides, right? One side is high up and then it goes down and down until it reaches the ground. This is called a trough.

In meteorology, a trough works kinda like a slide but in the sky. It's an area where the air is lower than the air around it. So, just like the slide, the air on the top of the trough slides down towards the bottom where the air is lower.

Why does this matter? Well, troughs can cause a change in the weather. When warm air slides down the trough, it makes the weather warmer. But when cold air slides down, it can make the weather colder.

So, next time you see a playground slide, remember what a trough is and how it can make the weather go up and down.
