ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

TrueCrypt

Okay kiddo, so let's imagine you have a diary and you put all your secrets in there. You want to keep them safe from anyone who might peek inside. So what can you do?

Well, you could put a lock on your diary, right? But what if someone else has the same key and can open it too? Not very secure. So instead, you could use something called TrueCrypt.

TrueCrypt is like a special lock for your computer files. When you install TrueCrypt, it creates a special "container" that looks like a regular file, but everything inside is actually hidden and protected by a password that only you know.

It's sort of like a secret hiding place, just like the forts you build with blankets in your bedroom. But instead of a blanket fort, it’s like a box that nobody can see or open without a special secret code.

You can put all sorts of things inside this secret place, like important documents, pictures, or even your Minecraft save files. Just like your diary, nobody else besides you can see what's inside.

So why do people use TrueCrypt? Well, sometimes you might use a computer that other people have access to, like at school or in a library, and you want to keep your stuff private. With TrueCrypt, you can make sure nobody can peek at your secrets, because they won't be able to open the secret hiding place.

But make sure you don't forget your password! Just like forgetting the password to your blanket fort, forgetting the password to your TrueCrypt container means you'll be locked out and unable to access your secret files. That's why it’s important to keep the password safe and not share it with anyone else!
