ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Twelve-step program

A twelve-step program is a set of guidelines that people use to help themselves recover from substance use disorder. It's based on shared experiences and encouragement. Each step encourages an individual to admit powerlessness over their addiction, face their wrongdoings, turn to a higher power for guidance, and help other people in recovery. People work on one step at a time, and meet with other people who are also working on the twelve steps. Together, they share their successes, failures and support one another.
