Two Row Wampum Treaty

Okay kiddo, today we are going to learn about the Two Row Wampum Treaty. It's a special agreement between two groups of people called the Haudenosaunee (also known as the Iroquois) and the Dutch.

Now imagine that you and your friend both have your own special toys that you love to play with. You don't want your friend to take your toys and your friend doesn't want you to take their toys, right? So what do you do? You make a deal to share and respect each other's toys.

The Two Row Wampum Treaty is like that. The Haudenosaunee and the Dutch were living near each other in what is now New York, and they wanted to make an agreement to share and respect each other's ways of living.

The Haudenosaunee have a special way of living called the "Great Law of Peace," which is all about fairness, justice, and respect for all people and living things. The Dutch had their own way of doing things too, like building houses and farming.

So the Two Row Wampum Treaty was made to respect each other's differences and live in peace. It was represented by a special beaded belt, called the Two Row Wampum Belt.

This belt has two rows of purple beads, which represent the Haudenosaunee people and their way of life. And in between the purple rows, there are three white rows of beads, which represent the Dutch people and their way of life.

The belt also has special designs that remind the people to respect each other's ways of living and not to interfere with each other's path. They agreed that they would help each other in times of need and that they would not do anything to harm each other or the natural world they both lived in.

So, that's the Two Row Wampum Treaty - a special agreement between two groups of people to live in peace, respect each other's ways of living, and protect the natural world they both call home.
