ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

U.S. Civil War

Ok kiddo, let me explain the U.S. Civil War to you in a way that is easy for you to understand.

A long, long time ago, when America was just starting out as a country, some people in the north and some people in the south had different ideas about what was right and wrong. People in the north thought that it was wrong to keep other people as slaves and they wanted to stop it. But people in the south thought that they needed the slaves to work on their farms and they didn't want anyone to tell them what to do.

The people in the north and the people in the south didn't get along very well and they started arguing and fighting. Finally, they decided that they couldn't live together anymore and they split up into two different groups. They called themselves the Union (the north) and the Confederacy (the south).

But the Confederacy wanted to keep the slaves and the Union didn't like that. So they started fighting in a big war called the U.S. Civil War. The war lasted for four years and lots of people died.

In the end, the Union won the war and they made a new law that said nobody could have slaves anymore. This was called the Emancipation Proclamation. It was a very important law because it meant that everyone in the United States was free.

The U.S. Civil War was a time of great sadness for many families, but it was also a time when people fought for what they believed in and made an important change for the better.
