ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Unger model

Okay kiddo, let's imagine you have a bunch of toys you like to play with. You also have a box where you keep some of those toys. The Unger Model is a way grown-ups use to decide which toys to put in the box and which ones to keep out.

Now, let's say you have 10 toys in total. You can only fit 5 toys in the box. So how do you decide which toys go in the box? You can use the Unger Model to help you make that decision.

The first thing you do is look at all the toys and decide which ones are the most important to you. Let's say you pick your favorite toy, your second favorite, your third favorite, your fourth favorite, and your fifth favorite. These are the five toys that will go into your box.

But what about the other 5 toys? You still like them, but they didn't make the top 5. Those toys are called "rejected alternatives." They're still important, but not as important as the toys in the box.

Now, grown-ups use the Unger Model in lots of different ways. They might use it to decide which policies are the most important for a country to have, or which products a company should sell. It's just a way to make tough decisions by focusing on what's most important.
