ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Uniparental inheritance

Hey kiddo, let's talk about how we inherit some of our traits from our parents. Uniparental inheritance is when we only inherit traits from one parent - either from our mom or our dad.

Let's talk about mitochondria. Mitochondria are tiny parts inside our cells that help produce the energy we need to do things like run, jump, and play. Mitochondria also have their own DNA, which tells them how to make the energy we need.

Now, when you were born, did you know that you inherited all of your mitochondria from your mom? That's right! Your dad doesn't pass on any of his mitochondria to you. So, all of the mitochondria in your body come from your mom and her DNA.

But that's not the case for all traits. For example, you can inherit traits like your hair color, eye color, and height from both mom and dad.

So, uniparental inheritance is just a fancy way of saying that for some specific traits, we only inherit them from one parent instead of both. Got it, kiddo?
