ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Unipotent

Unipotent is a fancy word that means something very simple. Imagine you have a toy car that can only go forward. It can't go backwards or turn left or right. That toy car is unipotent.

In science, we use the word unipotent to describe cells in our body that can only turn into one specific type of cell. For example, stem cells in our bone marrow can only turn into blood cells. They can't turn into skin cells or muscle cells or brain cells. They are unipotent.

Unipotent cells are important because they help our body make new cells when we need them. For example, when we get a cut, our body needs to make new cells to repair the wound. The unipotent cells in our body help make those new cells.

So, next time you play with your toy car, you can remember that cells in your body can also be unipotent and help us stay healthy!
