ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

United States ex rel. Murphy v. Porter

Okay, imagine you and your friend got in trouble for breaking some rules at school. The principal found out and punished you both. But then, imagine you find out that your friend actually did something worse than you did, and you were wrongly punished too. That's kind of what happened in a court case called United States ex rel. Murphy v. Porter.

A man named John Murphy worked for a company that sold medical equipment to the government. Another man named Paul Porter worked for the company too. Murphy found out that Porter was doing sneaky things, like lying on paperwork and giving out bad equipment. Murphy told his bosses about this, but they didn't do anything about it. Later, the government found out about Porter's bad behavior and the company got in trouble. Murphy saw this and thought: "Hey, I told my bosses about Porter a long time ago! I should get some credit for being honest!"

So, Murphy decided to sue his company, saying that they should pay the government back for the bad equipment and money lost because of Porter's actions. The case went to court, and Murphy won! The court said that Murphy did the right thing by telling his bosses about Porter, because it helped the government find out about the wrongdoing.

In the end, Murphy got some money from his company, and the government was able to get back some of the money that was lost. The lesson here is that it's important to be honest and speak up when something wrong is happening, even if it's scary to do so. And sometimes, good actions are rewarded by the law.
