ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Universal space (topology)

Okay kiddo, so imagine you have a really big space, like a playground. Now, let's say you have a bunch of different ways to get from one spot to another spot in the playground, like climbing over monkey bars, walking along a path, or even crawling under a bench.

Now let's make things even more interesting by saying that you can also get from one spot to another spot by teleporting! That's right, you can just instantly go from one spot to another without having to physically move there.

This is kind of like what universal space is like. It's a way of looking at all the different ways you can get from one point to another in a space, including through things like holes or tunnels that might not be directly connected.

Universal space is like a big catalog of all the different ways you can move around in a space, and it helps mathematicians understand and describe special properties of those spaces. Pretty cool, huh?
