ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Unsuccessful attempts to amend the Canadian Constitution

So, imagine you have a toy that you like but you want to make a change to it. Maybe you want to add some stickers or change the color. But when you try to do it, you realize it's really hard to make the changes and they don't work out the way you want them to.

That's kind of what happens when people try to change the Canadian Constitution. The Constitution is basically a big set of rules that tells the government how to work and what it has to do. But sometimes people want to change these rules to make them better or to add new things.

The problem is that changing the Constitution is really hard to do. It's like trying to change a toy that's been put together really tightly. In order to make changes to the Constitution, you need to get a lot of people to agree on what the changes should be. And in Canada, that means you need the agreement of the federal government and all the provincial governments.

This can be really tricky because the federal government and the provincial governments often have different ideas about what should be in the Constitution. They might have different priorities and different concerns about how the changes will affect them.

So, in the end, many attempts to amend the Canadian Constitution end up being unsuccessful. Everyone wants to make the toy better, but it's just too hard to do. But that doesn't mean we stop trying. We keep working to make the Constitution better and to make it work for everyone in Canada.
