ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Urban heat island

Imagine you live in a big city with lots of big buildings and roads. During the day, the sun shines down on everything and makes it very hot. All the stuff in the city like the buildings, roads, and cars absorb the heat and hold onto it. When it gets cooler at night, instead of cooling down like the trees and grass outside of the city do, the buildings and roads release the heat they were holding onto all day.

This makes the city hotter than the areas around it. This is called an urban heat island. It's like the city is a big hot island in the middle of cooler areas around it.

The heat can make people feel uncomfortable and can make air pollution worse. It can also harm plants and animals that can't handle the high temperatures.

So, cities try to find ways to decrease the effects of an urban heat island. Some ways they do this are by planting more trees and making buildings with cooler roofs and walls that don't absorb as much heat. They also try to reduce the amount of traffic and pollution coming from cars.

This way, the city can be a little cooler, a little more comfortable, and a little better for people and the environment.
