ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Urinary retention

Urinary retention is when you try to pee but you can't. You might feel like you really need to go, but only a little bit of pee comes out, or none at all. Sometimes, your tummy might feel really full because your bladder (the place where pee is stored) is getting bigger and bigger because there's no place for pee to come out.

Sometimes, urinary retention can happen because something is blocking the way the pee needs to come out. This could be something inside your body, like a small stone, or something outside your body, like a bandage that's too tight. Other times, you might not be able to pee because the muscles that help you go have gotten weak or aren't working right.

If you're having trouble peeing, it's important to tell someone who can help you, like a grown-up or a doctor. They can figure out why you can't pee and help you get better. They might give you some medicine or help you relax in a special way to help you start peeing again.
