ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Use–mention distinction

The use-mention distinction is when we use something in a sentence or when we mention something. For example, if I say "I saw a giraffe" I am using the word "giraffe" because I'm talking about a real giraffe that I saw. If I say "The word 'giraffe' is fun to say" I am mentioning the word "giraffe" because I'm not talking about a real giraffe, I'm just mentioning the word.
