ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Volitive modality

Okay kiddo, so when we talk about volitive modality, we're talking about the way people express their desires or wishes. You know when you say "I want this toy" or "I wish I could stay up late"? That's you using volitive modality to express what you want.

But sometimes, people use volitive modality to make requests or give commands. For example, when your mom says "Please clean your room" or your teacher says "Finish your homework", they are using volitive modality to ask you to do something.

Volitive modality can also be used to express things that might happen in the future. For example, if your mom says "We might go to the park later", she's showing that it's a possibility, but not a definite plan.

So basically, volitive modality is all about expressing desires, requests, commands, and possibilities. It's a way for us to communicate what we want or what might happen in the future.
