ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Vow of poverty

Okay kiddo, so a vow of poverty is when someone decides that they don't want to have a lot of money or own fancy things. They usually make this decision because they want to help people or they think that being rich can make them greedy and selfish.

It's kind of like when you decide to give away your toys to someone who really needs them instead of keeping them all for yourself. When someone takes a vow of poverty, they give up their money and possessions to help others or to focus on their spiritual growth.

This doesn't mean that they have to be homeless or live in poverty. They can still have a place to live and enough money to get by, but they won't have a lot of extra money or fancy things. It's like they decide to live a simpler life with fewer material things so that they can focus on things that they think are more important.

Some people who take a vow of poverty are monks or nuns, but other people can do it too. It's a personal choice that someone makes based on their own beliefs and values.
