ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Wallowing

Okay kiddo, have you ever seen a pig roll around in mud? That's kind of like wallowing. Wallowing is when an animal, like a pig or a hippopotamus, rolls around in mud or water. They do it to cool off, get rid of bugs or parasites, or to protect their skin from the sun.

Sometimes people use the word wallowing to describe how they feel emotionally. For example, if someone is feeling sad and they keep thinking about all the things that went wrong in their life, they might say that they're wallowing in self-pity. This is kind of like when a pig wallows in mud, because they're not really doing anything to change their situation, they're just stewing in their bad feelings.

But don't worry, kiddo, everybody feels sad or down sometimes. It's important to talk to someone you trust and find ways to make yourself feel better, like going for a walk or doing something you enjoy. And if you see a pig rolling around in mud, you'll know they're just wallowing to stay cool and happy!
