Wave elections in the United States

Okay kiddo, so let's say you and your friends are voting on what game to play at recess. If most of your friends vote for one game, then that game would win, right?

Well, it's kinda like that in the United States, but instead of playing games, people are voting for which person they want to be in charge of making the rules for the whole country. And when a lot of people are really mad or really happy about something, they might all vote for the same person or the same political party.

When that happens all at once in a big election, we call it a "wave election". It's like a big wave in the ocean that comes all at once and washes everything in its path.

So if a lot of people are really mad that their favorite basketball player isn't playing, they might all vote for a certain political party. Or if a lot of people are really happy that they got a raise at work, they might vote for a different political party.

Sometimes, a wave election can be really important because it can change which political party has more power in the whole country. That means they get to make more rules and decisions about things that affect all of us.
