ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Weapon focus

Let's say you have a toy box with many toys in it, and you're playing with your friends. They ask you to give them a toy, but you can't decide which one to give. Suddenly, your friend points to a toy gun and says "I want that one!" Now, because your friend is focusing on the toy gun, all the other toys in the box seem less important. This is called "weapon focus". Just like how a toy gun can distract you from other toys, a real weapon can distract people from other things they might have seen or heard. For example, if someone were holding a knife during a robbery, witnesses might only remember the knife and forget other details about what the robber looked like or what they said. This is why police officers are trained to ask questions quickly after a crime is committed, before witnesses forget important details because of the weapon focus.
