ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Welch's method

Welch's method is a fancy way to measure signals. It works by breaking up a big signal into smaller pieces, making it easier to understand. It's like breaking up a big puzzle into smaller pieces to see what's going on in each piece.

Let's say you have a really long song, like "The Wheels on the Bus." But you want to understand the different instruments playing in the song, like the drum, guitar, and trumpet. Welch's method would break up the song into smaller pieces, called segments. Each segment would be just a little part of the song, like the first verse or chorus.

Then, Welch's method would analyze each segment and see what instruments are playing in that segment. It would use something called a Fourier transform to do this. That's a really big word, so let's think of it like a magic trick. When you do a Fourier transform on a signal, you can see all the different colors of the music, like the different notes being played.

Finally, after Welch's method has analyzed each segment, it would put all the information back together to give you a complete picture of the song. You would be able to see which instruments were playing in which parts of the song and how loud they were.

Overall, Welch's method is just a fancy tool that helps us understand signals better by breaking them up into smaller parts, using a magic trick to analyze each part, and then putting it all back together again.
