ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Wheelbuilding

Have you ever seen a big wheel on a bicycle? It's made up of many little metal parts called spokes that connect the hub (center of the wheel) to the rim (outer part of the wheel). Building a wheel means putting all these spokes in just the right way so that the wheel is strong and can spin smoothly.

First, you need to pick the right spokes, which are like tiny metal sticks that are different lengths and strengths. Then, you take the hub and the rim and place them on a special tool called a truing stand. This helps you to adjust the spokes just right so that the wheel is straight.

Next, you take one spoke and thread it through a hole in the hub. Then, you put a little metal piece called a nipple on the end of the spoke and use a special tool to tighten it just a little bit. You do this for all the spokes around one side of the wheel.

Once you have all the spokes in place, you start tightening them a little bit more while making sure the wheel stays straight on the truing stand. It's kind of like a puzzle – you need to adjust each spoke just right so that the wheel ends up being strong and straight.

When you've tightened all the spokes enough, you flip the wheel over and do the same thing on the other side. Finally, you check the wheel to make sure it's straight and strong, and then you're done!
