ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Whirlwind

Imagine standing in a big room with a lot of air around you. You might feel some wind blowing on your face or body. Now imagine that this wind starts to spin around really fast and picks up all the dust and leaves on the ground, making a big messy circle in the middle. This spinning wind is called a whirlwind, or a dust devil.

Whirlwinds can happen when the ground is heated by the sun and the air above it gets really hot too. As the heated air rises up, cooler air from outside rushes in to take its place. This creates a swirling motion, like when water goes down a drain.

Sometimes, if the conditions are right, these swirling winds can get stronger and become a whirlwind. They might spin fast and go up high into the air, making a big cone shape. Whirlwinds can be dangerous if you're caught in one because things can get thrown around and you can get hurt.

If you ever see a whirlwind, it's best to stay away from it and watch from a safe distance.
