ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Will-o'-the-wisp

Okay kiddo, have you ever been outside at night and seen a little glowing light off in the distance? Well, some people call that a "will-o'-the-wisp".

Now, this might sound a little bit spooky, but don't worry, it's not really scary. A will-o'-the-wisp is simply a kind of ghostly light that sometimes appears at night over swamps, marshes or other wet places.

Scientists believe that these lights are caused by gases that are given off by rotting plants or mud. These gases sometimes ignite into a little flame, and that's the light you see.

Some people say that will-o'-the-wisps are actually fairies or spirits dancing around in the dark. But, there is no scientific proof of that, okay?

So, next time you're outside at night and you see a little flicker of light in the distance, don't be afraid. Just remember that it's probably just a natural phenomenon caused by gas and not a spooky ghost.
