ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Santelmo

Okay kiddo, have you ever seen a beautiful, colorful light show on the sky? That’s called an aurora or northern lights. But not all lights in the sky are beautiful like the aurora. There is one that looks like a tiny ball of lightning that can be seen during a storm, and that’s called a santelmo.

A santelmo happens when there is a lot of electricity in the air during a thunderstorm. This electricity can create a special type of light called plasma. This plasma is like a gas that’s so hot, it becomes a glowing ball of light.

And when this glowing ball of light is hovering near tall objects, like trees or buildings or even ship masts, it can make a santelmo. It’s like the electricity is trying to find a way to escape from the storm clouds, and it jumps from the clouds to the tall objects.

So, if you see a tiny ball of fire-like light during a storm, that’s a santelmo. But remember, as fascinating as it looks, always stay indoors during a thunderstorm and stay safe away from anything tall or exposed.
