ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Wind direction

Have you ever blown bubbles with a straw? When you blow through the straw, the air travels in one direction and makes the bubbles go the same way. The wind outside works the same way.

Wind is a big movement of air that blows around Earth. It can be strong or weak, and it can blow in different directions. The direction of wind is important because it can tell us a lot about what the weather is like and what might be coming our way.

Wind direction is like the path that the wind takes when it blows. It can go north, south, east, or west. Sometimes it can blow diagonally too! Imagine that you are holding a compass like a map, the direction that's facing you is North, and the direction that's behind you is South. In the same way, when someone talks about the direction the wind is blowing from, they will use words like north, south, east, and west to describe the way it's going.

When you hear a weather report on the news or from your parents, they might tell you which way the wind is blowing. This can help you know if it's going to be hot or cold, sunny or rainy, or even if there might be a storm coming. If the wind is coming from a warm place, it might make the weather feel hot. But if it's coming from a cold place, it could make it chilly or even freeze!

It's important to know where the wind is coming from so that we can prepare for any weather changes that might be happening soon. Now that you understand wind direction, you can be like a mini weather reporter too!
