ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Wind-assisted propulsion

Okay kiddo, have you ever felt the wind blow on your face really hard? It can be pretty strong, especially on a windy day. Now, imagine a really, really big boat that uses the wind to help push it forward. That's called wind-assisted propulsion.

You see, boats need a way to move through the water, and most use big engines to do that. But, some boats want to be more eco-friendly and use wind power instead. They do this by having big sails that catch the wind and push the boat forward.

Just like how you need to steer your kite to make it move in the direction you want, sailors need to steer their boat's sails to catch the wind in the right way. This can be a bit tricky, but it's also really cool because the boat can travel faster with the help of the wind.

Wind-assisted propulsion is a great way to use renewable energy and reduce the boat's carbon footprint. Plus, it's also really fun to watch big sailboats race each other and see how fast they can go with the wind pushing them along.
