Woody breast

Okay, so you know how sometimes when you eat chicken, it can feel kind of tough or chewy? That might be because of something called "woody breast."

Woody breast is when the muscle in the chicken's breast gets really thick and hard. It's kind of like when your muscles are sore after exercising really hard, but instead of getting sore, the chicken's muscle gets tough.

Scientists aren't exactly sure why this happens, but they think it might have to do with the way the chickens are raised and what they're fed.

Unfortunately, there's not really anything you can do to prevent woody breast from happening in the chickens that you buy at the grocery store. But if you do end up with a piece of chicken that feels tough or chewy, don't worry! It's still safe to eat, and it might even have some extra protein because of the woody breast. And remember, there are lots of other delicious things to eat besides chicken if you don't feel like dealing with woody breast!
