ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Word sense

Hey there kiddo, have you ever noticed that some words can have different meanings depending on how you use them? This is what we call "word sense".

Let me give you an example. When we say "I'm going to play with my sister," we mean that we're going to spend some time together and have fun. But if we say "I'm going to play with fire," that means we're going to do something dangerous and risky.

The way we understand what a word means in a specific context is by using our knowledge of the world around us and the other words we hear or read along with it. This is called "context."

Sometimes, words can have multiple senses, like the word "bank". It can refer to a place where you keep your money, but it can also refer to the side of a river. So, when you hear the word "bank", you need to pay attention to the context to figure out which meaning is being used.

Understanding different word senses is important because it helps us communicate better with others. It's like having a secret code that we all agree to use so that we can understand each other.
