ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

XY-writer

Hey there kiddo!

Do you know what an xy-writer is? No? It's a machine that can create pictures just by following some instructions you give it. How cool is that?!

Okay, let's imagine you want to draw a happy face on a piece of paper. But you don't want to use your hand to draw it, you want the xy-writer to do it for you.

First, you have to tell the xy-writer where to start. You do this by placing the pointy part of the xy-writer, called the "pen", at a spot on the paper.

Then, you give the xy-writer the instructions for drawing the happy face. You do this by giving it two numbers: an x value and a y value. The x value tells the xy-writer how far right or left to move the pen. The y value tells it how far up or down to move the pen.

For example, you might say "move the pen right 3 units and up 4 units". The xy-writer will move the pen accordingly, from its starting point, and make a mark on the paper where the pen lands.

You keep giving the xy-writer these instructions, called "coordinates", until it has drawn the entire happy face.

The xy-writer is really good at following directions, and it can create very precise and complicated pictures if you give it enough instructions.

Pretty neat, huh? Now you know what an xy-writer is and how it works!
