Xanthomatosis is a big word that describes when people get yellow bumps on their skin. These bumps are caused by a buildup of something called cholesterol in the body.
When we eat food, our bodies use some of it for energy. Some of that food turns into something called cholesterol, which helps to make certain parts of our body work properly. But if we eat too much of the wrong kinds of food, like lots of fatty or oily things, our bodies can't use all of the cholesterol, and it starts to build up.
When there's too much cholesterol in our body, it can start to make bumps under our skin. These bumps could show up on our feet, hands, back, or anywhere on our body.
Xanthomatosis can be a sign of some problems with our body. Doctors might look for these bumps to see if someone has a problem with their liver or another part of their body that handles cholesterol. People with xanthomatosis might need to eat healthier foods or take medicine to help control their cholesterol levels.
