ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Yāska

Yāska was a very intelligent man from a long time ago who wrote a book called the Nirukta. The book is about words and what they mean. Yāska wanted to understand how people used words in different situations and what they really meant.

Think about when your mom says “clean your room.” Do you know exactly what she means? Maybe she means put your toys away, make your bed, and vacuum the floor. Yāska wanted to know these kinds of things about all words in the language.

He looked at lots of different texts and talked to lots of people to figure out what different words meant. He even looked at ancient stories and songs to see how people in the past used different words.

He was kind of like a word detective! His work helped people thousands of years ago to better understand their own language and communicate with each other more accurately.
