ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Z-drag

Okay kiddo, imagine you have two toy cars that are stuck and you need to pull them apart. But pulling with just your hands won't work because they're too strongly stuck. So what do you do? You make a pulley system using a rope, a carabiner (a hook), and another rope.

You tie one end of the rope to a tree or something strong, then thread it through the carabiner. The carabiner will be hooked to the toy cars so that one end of the rope is pulling one car in one direction, while the other end of the rope is pulling the other car in the opposite direction.

Now it's time to make the pulley system. You need two more ropes - one to make a loop around the carabiner, and another to tie to the loop rope so that you can pull. When you pull on this third rope, it will slide through the loop, which will make the carabiner and the two pulling ropes move closer together. This is what we call a "z-drag" because it looks like the letter "Z" when you draw out the system.

By using this z-drag pulley system, you can pull much harder than just with your hands. You can also adjust the direction and angle of the pull, which can help you unstick the toy cars effectively.

This same z-drag system is used by grown-ups too, not just for unsticking toy cars! It's useful for pulling heavy things, like boats that are stuck on rocks, or recovering objects from deep water.
