ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Z-relation

Z-relation, also known as the Z-score or standard score, is a way to figure out how far away a number is from the average of a group of numbers. Let's say we have a bunch of numbers, like 10, 15, 20, 25, and 30. The average of these numbers is 20, which means most of the numbers are close to 20.

But what if we want to know how different each number is from the average? That's when we can use the Z-relation. Z-relation tells us how many standard deviations each number is away from the average. Don't worry if you don't know what standard deviations mean, I'll explain that too.

A standard deviation measures how spread out or close together the numbers are in a group. If the numbers are all really close to each other, the standard deviation is small. But if the numbers are really spread out and not close to the average, then the standard deviation is big.

To calculate the Z-relation, we need to know the average and the standard deviation of a group of numbers. In our example, the average is 20. The standard deviation is a bit trickier to calculate, but let's pretend it is 5 for now (remember, we're pretending we're 5 years old, so we're keeping it simple!).

Let's say we want to find the Z-relation for the number 25. To do that, we take the number we're interested in (25), subtract the average (20), and divide it by the standard deviation (5). So in this case, (25 - 20) / 5 = 1.

What does this 1 mean? Well, it tells us that the number 25 is 1 standard deviation above the average of 20. So it's a bit higher than most of the numbers in the group.

We can do the same thing for the other numbers in the group. For example, if we want to find the Z-relation for 10, we do (10 - 20) / 5 = -2. This means that 10 is 2 standard deviations below the average.

If we find the Z-relation for all the numbers in the group, we can compare them and see which ones are closer or farther away from the average. It helps us understand how different each number is from the rest of the group.

So, the Z-relation is a helpful tool that allows us to understand how much a number stands out from the average, using standard deviations. This way, we can see if a number is really different or if it's just close to the rest of the group.
