ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Zugzwang

Zugzwang is a funny word that describes a situation in a game where a player is forced to make a move, but any move they make will put them in a worse position.

Think of it like this: imagine you're playing a game of checkers with your friend, and it's your turn to move. But, no matter which checker you move, your friend will be able to capture it on their next turn. You have no good moves to make! That's zugzwang.

This is a really cool concept in games like chess and checkers, where each move you make affects the game in a big way. It creates extra challenge and tension, because you really have to think about your moves and plan ahead. And, if you're lucky enough to put your opponent in zugzwang, you might be able to win the game!
