A sewer system is a part of a city or town that collects wastewater from our homes and carries it away to be treated. Wastewater includes things like water from our showers, toilets, sinks, and washing machines. When wastewater comes out of our homes, it enters a network of pipes that connect to the sewer system. The pipes transport the wastewater to treatment plants where bacteria and other microorganisms help break down the waste, that way it can't pollute the environment. From the treatment plant, the water is released into a body of water, like a river or lake. This water is much safer for other animals and people.
