ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

refusal to serve in the israeli military

You know how sometimes your mom or dad asks you to do something you really don’t want to do? Like clean your room or help with the dishes? Well, it’s kind of like that but much bigger. In Israel, when people turn 18, they are required to serve in the military for a few years.

But some people don’t want to for different reasons. Some people think that the military isn’t doing the right things and they don’t want to be a part of that. Some people have religious reasons or they are against violence of any kind.

When people refuse to join the military, they can get into trouble with the government. They might have to go to jail or pay a fine. But some people think it’s worth it if it means standing up for what they believe in.

It’s important to remember that not everyone has to agree with each other’s choices, but everyone deserves to have the right to make choices for themselves.
